Cleveland State University is pleased to accept students from many language backgrounds and wants to help all students succeed in their academic program. Therefore, all nonnative English-speaking students must prove or gain satisfactory communicative competence in English early in their studies. Communicative competence means proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing of formal English for the purpose of university studies. The English as a Second Languages (ESL) Program is designed for both undergraduate and graduate students for whom English is not their first language, regardless of citizenship.
Undergraduate Students:
Currently, CSU has two undergraduate ESL courses. To view descriptions of the courses offered through ESL, simply click on ESL Course Descriptions.
The placement evaluation for newly admitted undergraduate students includes an on-campus computerized test (COMPASS). Depending on these results, a written test and an oral interview may also be needed before students register for classes their first quarter on campus. Because placement is very important, all students need to be placed by the ESL Program Director, who fits students' ESL study requirements to individual needs and makes recommendations to the students' advisor.
