Final ceremonial beam to be hoisted into place on Wednesday, December 17

CSU President Michael Schwartz, CSU Board of Trustees Chairman Ronald Weinberg, other CSU administrators, project designers and contractors;

WHAT:
The “topping off” ceremony for CSU’s new College of Education and Human Services Building;

WHEN:
Wednesday, December 17 at 1:00 p.m.;

WHERE:
At the building site on Euclid Avenue between Mather Mansion and Fenn Tower, just east of East 24th Street. Parking will be available in the East Garage (Lot EG), 2506 Chester Ave. (Enter from Chester Avenue eastbound only.)

The final steel girder will be hoisted into place on Wednesday atop the frame of the new College of Education and Human Services Building. The “topping off” ceremony, a tradition in the construction industry, will mark completion of a major milestone in the construction of the $36 million, 97,000-square-foot building. Ground was broken on August 20.

A specially-painted white beam will be signed by CSU President Michael Schwartz, CSU Board of Trustees Chairman Ronald Weinberg, CSU Provost Mary Jane Saunders other University administrators, project designers and contractors prior to it being hoisted into position carrying an evergreen tree and U.S. and Ohio flags.

Scheduled for completion in January 2010, the building will provide the 40-year-old College a home of its own for the first time, a spectacular addition to the CSU and city landscapes. The facility will have 20 instructional rooms; computer, math and science laboratories; an auditorium for public forums; outdoor gardens; and indoor general gathering spaces.

The new building is part of Cleveland State’s $300 million construction plan that includes a $29 million recreation center, a $55 million student center, residence halls, parking garages, athletic facilities, administration and research centers, and more.
