CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

As an English major at Cleveland State, you will benefit from small classes taught by outstanding faculty, many of whom may become your mentors as you work through the program. The program may be completed on a part time basis—days, evenings, and weekends.

Student organizations include: Whisky Island (creative writing magazine), The Cauldron, and the Vindicator (newspapers). Additionally, the Poetry Center holds workshops as well as readings by students, Cleveland area writers, and distinguished visiting writers.

Marketable Skills
The skills you will develop as an English major will serve you well in the twenty-first century workplace in which versatile and transferable skills are highly desirable. A survey of employers indicates that they seek employees who have strong skills in communication, writing, research, critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. As an English major, you will develop abilities in all of these areas. Additionally, an undergraduate degree in English serves as an excellent foundation for a professional degree in many fields, including communications, law, medicine, and business administration.

Many occupations today require a college educated individual who can write and speak well, solve problems, learn new information quickly and work well with others on a team. This means that college graduates use their education in a wide variety of fields, and your future career may relate more to your personal career interests, work values and transferable skills than any specific academic major. However, the following list contains a representative sample of job titles of former graduates with an English major. Use this as an idea list, and remember that it represents some, but certainly not all, of the careers you might consider.

Students obtaining employment immediately upon graduation are usually those with the best college records and a willingness to relocate to find a job. Some of these jobs also require education beyond a bachelors' degree.
