A Message to the Campus Community

May 25, 2011

I am excited to announce that Provost Mearns and I have selected Dr. Meredith Bond - a prominent heart researcher and University of Maryland department chair - to be the next Dean of the College of Sciences and Health Professions. With more than 25 years experience in cardiovascular research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Heart Association, Dr. Bond will play a key role in advancing CSU's commitment to health professions.

As a former scientist from the Cleveland Clinic, she will expand CSU's important relationships with area hospitals, while developing the University's unique new medical school partnership with NEOMED. Dr. Bond's outstanding reputation and academic experience positions her well to advance CSU's research and fundraising capabilities, and our renowned center in gene research will continue to gain national prominence through her leadership.

Dr. Bond's diverse experience aligns closely with CSU's objectives throughout the College's many disciplines. In recent years, she has focused her attention on education, having mentored more than 30 undergraduate and medical students and more than two dozen doctoral students.

Since 2003, Dr. Bond has chaired the highly ranked Department of Physiology at the University of Maryland's School of Medicine. In addition to her research with the Cleveland Clinic, she served on the faculty of Case Western Reserve University and has held various roles with the NIH.

Dr. Bond earned her bachelor's degree from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, and her Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Bond to CSU, where we will continue to set new standards in education, research and workforce development. Dr. Bond will commence her service on July 18.

I also extend my heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Bette Bonder, who has worked admirably and tirelessly for the past five years to nurture the College of Sciences and Health Professions to a level that has elevated the reputation of the entire University. Her vision and commitment was instrumental in making CSU a Center of Excellence in 21st Century Health Professions. As she returns to teaching, her many contributions will continue to play a role in the growing success of the College and our University.
